The U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry voted 15-5 to advance the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013, a Farm Bill authored by Committee Chairwoman Senator Debbie Stabenow and Ranking Member Senator Thad Cochran. The measure will now go to the full Senate for consideration.

Real and imagined fears of "gutting" the Act have squelched this debate and collaterally stopped any improvements as well. To revive a meaningful and helpful debate, there must be positive ideas and a commitment to improving species conservation. We believe better conservation will reduce needless burdens on landowners and other citizens.

Of the 13,000-plus whitetails currently honored in Boone and Crockett records, only five--a scant .03 percent--tape 300 inches or more. Remember, 300 inches equals 25 linear feet of antler points, beams, circumferences and spread. Odds of encountering such a colossal trophy in the wild, and taking it in fair chase, are infinitesimally low.

The triennial event will be held at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno. It features a public exhibition of World's Records, Top 5 trophies and records-book specimens taken by hunters age 16 and under during the past three years.

But uncertainty is the wondrous, magical element of the hunt that compels us to spend remarkable amounts of time and money and, more importantly, heart and soul. Researchers studied trends in the size of trophy horns and antlers using Boone and Crockett Club records. Results, published by The Wildlife Society in the Feb. 2013 issue of Wildlife Monographs, did show that trophy size of North American big game declined in 14 of 25 categories, but only by an average of 1.87 percent for antlered species and 0.68 percent for horned species, between 1950 and 2008.
